November 3, 2008

Beginning in 1995, Flying Changes has been a source of support and inspiration for both its clients and the larger community it serves. The special bond that exists between horses and humans has been the centerpiece of services and programs that have benefitted many people.

2008 has been a year of change and regrouping. Leadership transitions in both board and staff required an appraisal and adjustment of operations. Accumulated problems with the conditions of the facility required a significant investment in time and money. Notwithstanding those challenges, recent months have witnessed an upward swing in the number of lesson participants – doubled over the past three months.

Despite that encouraging trend, it has been very difficult to replenish funds during this difficult time in the economy. For the past several months, monthly operating costs have exceeded income from lessons and outside sources. So we have come to an unfortunate and unhappy decision with regard to our beloved Flying Changes. As we have been unable to raise the necessary funds to support ongoing activities, we are forced to take the necessary steps to close the organization, effective Friday, October 31, 2008. Following numerous discussions over the past three months, the board has now voted to take this action.

The future is uncertain. For now we know only that the organization and operation we have known as Flying Changes will cease operations. We are committed to ensuring a safe future for our horses. We have a responsibility to parents and clients who have prepaid for lessons; anyone in that situation should contact the office.

During the next few weeks we will be working to further assess the situation and explore the options for next steps. This means of course that continuing care for the horses will be needed. While we will not be offering any lessons we ask those who have been volunteering to continue to work with us during this transition period. Again, those who are able to help us should contact the office.

Above all else we wish to thank all of our loyal extended family – clients, parents, volunteers and financial supporters. Your participation and spirit has made the barn a special place and at this very sad time we will all try to hold on to the many fond memories we have of all that has been accomplished.
